Béchamel sauce
- 5 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons salt
- ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
- In a sauce pan over med-low heat, melt the butter.
- Add the flour to the melted butter and mix until smooth.
- Cook the flour/butter mixture until its a golden color. about 6 mins.
- Meanwhile, in another sauce pan heat the milk until it is about to boil.
- Add the hot milk to the butter/flour mixture a cup at a time. Whisk continuously until all the milk is added and the mixture is very smooth.
- Bring it to a boil, stirring constantly, and cook for about 10 minutes. You will notice it thickening as you stir.
- Remove from heat.
- Season with the salt and nutmeg.
- Set aside until you are ready to use it.
